Purpose _____________________ The purpose of a Study Center is to provide the environment and means to further the self-development of college students in preparation for their professional and social responsibilities. While housing activities and services, the characteristic feature of this educational establishment is home-like, family environment. As few would deny that the family is the fundamental source of education, a Study Center seeks to perpetuate the friendly, inspiring, accommodating reality of a good family. Such an environment to excellence and self-giving: not only intellectual, but spiritual, social and human as well. The whole man must be educated. It is in this setting that the Center seeks to: - Assist students in their adjustment to university life and to life in a large urban setting (especially for those coming from the provinces).
- Facilitate the entry of high school graduates into a new academic experience, which requires them to make changes in their approach to study, research and selection of programs.
- Encourage students to become more diligent and personally responsible for the effective
_____________________ utilization of time and the fulfillment of academic requirements, by small-group counseling and individual tutoring. - Bridge the gap between the community, the university, and the students caught in between, by bringing together civic leaders, businessmen, members of various professions, and students.
- Compensate for the growth of the college population whose size strains the necessary personal relationship between faculty and students, by facilitating mutual encounters.
- Help students overcome any narrowness stemming from academic specialization, limited experience or social background, by welcoming a pluralism of convictions, by promoting a wide range of activities.
The Study Center strives to develop men who carry out their professional work not only with competence but also with social responsibility and a deep Christian outlook. The Study Center has this idea: to help those who make use of its services to bend the human knowledge received at the university with both the doctrine that must guide their minds and the virtues that must direct their actions. It is through this growth in maturity and authenticity in all levels, so necessary during those years in college, that young people will fulfill the important task of giving both a human and Christian tone to society. In addition to the informal aspect of a home, activities which contribute to the cultural and _____________________ academic development of college students and not available elsewhere are offered regularly at the Center. They are designed to fill real needs, not simply provide entertainment or pastimes. The spiritual direction of these Study Centers is entrusted to Opus Dei, a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church.
